FAQ

What is that thing? or What is a "Hybrid-Cajon" Drum?

It's a "Hybrid-Cajon drum. A type of wood headed hand drum that exists at the crossroads of the box cajon, the djembe, and the conga, while defining a new and unique sound in it's own right.

What’s the drum head made of? Is that wood? Wow?!

The drum head is special grade of 2.5mm cross-laminated 5-ply solid birch plywood. It never needs tuning and can be cleaned with normal household cleaners.

It is thinner than what you normally find on a cajon drum, which is what makes it so responsive and lively. At the same time it is stable and durable. No, you can not hit it really hard with a hammer (I have tested everything), and if you are a big guy who likes to get drunk and bash on things, then maybe my drums are not for you, but with proper care the head should last a lifetime.

The drum head is finish multiple coats of a water-based, low-voc commercial floor finish that contains metallic particles for extra abrasion resistance making it hold up well to brush work. It is then rubbed out until it is smooth like a baby's bottom.

Is it hard to play? How do you play it? What does it feel like?

It is easy to play, you just hit it with your hands, preferably following a more or less consistent tempo and groove ; ) Anything goes, and everybody plays it a little differently as an expression of where they are coming from, which is cool.
As a starting point you can think of the bass notes like a djembe with an open palm bounced off the center, the open tones and mids respond well to a more conga like technique and the rim rewards you for all the cajon style fingerwork you can throw at it. In between there are muted tones, multiple bass tones, melodic rim shots, warm, round open tones, clicks and taps and pink and ponk and we haven't even dialed up the snare yet!
The extra thin head material is highly "responsive", providing feedback to the player making the drum feel energetic under your hands. The dynamics and tone respond beautifully to nuanced technique rather than the application of force. The head is smooth, the edges nicely contoured and the relatively low density body is forgiving of long rimwork while ringing with a muted, yet bell-like resonance.

Who are you people? or Why should I trust you?

Circle 7 Drums is a small family business located near Mount Shasta, in far northern Californinia. The staff is basically just Patrick, a couple of his 4 kids, and his dog with an intermittent "production assistant" as needed. He has been producing drums under the C7D name since 2010 for those lucky enough to find out about them in between owning and operating www.megatar.com where he has personally hand built almost 300 12-string bass guitars.

Why seven sides?

There is just something about the 7 sided shape and the sound that it produces that is almost magical. I have tried all sorts of different geometries, but kept coming back to seven for the "nodal overtones" and the way the shape of the drum fits the body and how the "corners" of the drum give the player a visual reference to the different regions of tone on the drum head.
