Why 7 sides?
Do you really want to know?
-I tried 8 sides, meh. I tried 6 sides, nah. I tried 12 sides. 24 sides. I tried everything. There is just something special about the 7 sided shape.
-7 sides is the magic number that emphasizes the “nodal overtones” that are a big part of the uniquely musical quality of this drum. (If you ever get one you’ll know what I mean)
-The 7-sided body and the 7 chevrons at the corners really help define the head of the drum so that the player can develop more precise technique. For this reason I sometimes print or paint a star graphic on the head to act as a map to all the different sounds that are available.
-Fewer joints means less glue, and more solid wood in drum body for better resonance.
-A normal box cajon has 6 sides. So this is the next generation with 7 sides.
-7 sides is ergonomic. Fits between legs comfortably, presents itself to player appropriately, and offers a flat face to the floor when tipping drum forward. it is difficult to describe, but when you sit with the thing in front of you, there is a center point and a point on either side. This would be true of a hexagon or an octagon as well, but the spacing of the points is optimized with a heptagon.
-6 sides and 8 sides looked like a stop sign or something out of geometry text book. The 7 sided shape has a beautiful, gem like sculptural and geometric quality that is unique. It is symmetrically asymmetrical. If you rotate the drum it seems to dance around because it changes from visually symmetrical to visually not symmetrical as it spins. I like that.
-It is representative of a 4 over 3 groove. Heaven over earth and the male and the female intertwined.

-The Number Seven, is seen as the numerical symbol of Fullness, Completion, and Perfection.
-There are many sources in the internet for the major significance of the number 7 in many of the worlds sacred texts.
-7 is the number representing the higher self. As represented by a Michelangelo-esque human form with it’s usual five points of contact with a circle, which then sprouts wings which create 2 new points on the circle. I built a 7 sided window into my first shop door for that reason.
-Lucky 7, 7 days, 7 colors in a rainbow, 7 notes in a diatonic scale, 7 continents, 7 chakras, 7 tribes of the Cherokee Nation, 7 stars in the Pleiadies, 7 wonders of the ancient world, The 7 dwarves, 7 Harry Potter Books, 7 Just-About-Everything-Cool, etc. Good things come in 7's.
