The Best Finish for Your Hybrid Cajon Drum.

In search of the right surface treatment for my drums I have tried just about every non-toxic option from all natural to high tech.  From shellac to oil, beeswax and pine resin mixes, hand-rubbed, french polished, I have mixed my own and shipped stuff in, I tried tung oil varnishes, water-based polyurethane, I spent a lot of money on professional HVLP spray systems and a dedicated spray booth with advanced water-based musical instrument lacquers.

I know that what you want is something that looks good and is highly durable, what I wanted was a finish that met the all of the following qualifications:

The Story

Somewhere up in the wild and rugged mountains a man lives with his big family.  Theirs is a homey, rustic life, infused with the beauty of nature and a love for simple pleasures.  Their days are occupied with chores and compromises, but it also filled to bouyancy  with fresh air, good music, and laughter.  This man is a maker of things, a tinkerer on a very high level.  He endeavors through his work to pay homage to the savage perfection of this earthly existence.  He strives to bring forth well-conceived and harmonious things because he is a believer in the restorative power of beauty and good intent.

Working with his surroundings and to honor the ever giving elemental force of the trees, wanting, out of reverence, to give them voice, compelled by love, inspired by song, he forges the bones of the ancestor trees into resonant vessels to amplify a new yet eternal chorus of voices.  Hear now the message they convey! Of the power of love in the throbbing heart of us all!  Each voice a spirit calling from within.  Each a vision of the beautiful imperfection of life.  Each seeking a keeper to carry it out into the wide world.  To make it sing, to inspire revery, to quell fear and bring us closer together.

Yet there were few that found their way across his path and the magic of what he had created was little known and almost regarded as myth.  All this talk of beauty and harmony and the so-called power of rhythm and love, was all out of place, almost quaint to the casual citizen of the day.  But he persisted.  For every time a believer found their way up into the mountains and left with a gift of subtle, divine vibrational ecstasy, he knew that a seed had been sown, and a good thing done, and that perhaps because of it the future would be better for his family and the world.

I heard that he is still up there and that the music is as real as ever.  Maybe if you find yourself deep in the mountains, exhausted from the search, finally coming to peace with the fact that you may never find what you seek, you might hear a sound, a pure voice echoing through the trees, beckoning, leading you home to a place inside yourself where music unites the soul of us all.

Where are they now? A drum finds it's way to L.A. and ends up in a film soundtrack.

Whether it is finding the perfect song or score, or creating a unique composition, Simone Benyacar is known for connecting with the audience and creating an emotional response that lasts long after the viewing experience is over.

I sent a drum to Simone last December.  Enough time had passed for him to form an opinion so I reached out to him in order to find out what his experience had been like.  I was glad I did.

He could Play That drum just like ringin' a bell.

Simon Chrisman crosses my path from time to time bringing with him an infectious love of mt. biking that he shares with my two sons and and incredible musical and rhythmic chops on the hammered dulcimer, upright bass and more.  I finally got him to sit down behind one of my drums and 15 minutes later he was still at it.  Here is a little taste.

Lifetime Warranty and How to Care for Your C7D Hybrid-Cajon

Lifetime Warranty:

Simulated scene of abuse performed  by professionals in a controlled environment.  Do not attempt at home.  Doing so voids your warranty.  Thank you, the management.

If at anytime during it’s lifetime a Circle 7 Drum Hybrid-Cajon becomes unplayable due to defective materials or faulty craftsmanship, we will repair or replace it at no cost.  See below for more details.

If you believe your drum needs to be repaired, please contact Circle 7 Drums for instructions before sending anything back.  Please see Returns Policy for more details.

Shipping cost from you to me is your responsibility.

We will inspect the instrument and if we find the failure was caused by a defect in the original materials or craftsmanship we will repair or replace the instrument and return it to you at no charge, including shipping.

If the instrument was abused, neglected, mistreated, etc. and this is clearly the cause of the failure, we will document the findings and give you the option of having it repaired at a reasonable cost, or simply to have the instrument returned to you.  In both instances, the return shipping will be your responsibility.  See below for more details.

How to take care of your C7D Hybrid-Cajon:

Maintaining your warranty and keeping your Circle 7 Drum in good condition requires only that you treat it as you would any other fine musical instrument.  By following a few basic rules and using common sense you will ensure that your drum holds it’s sound and looks beautiful indefinitely.

•  Store in a cool, dry place, in a good quality case.

•  Protect from extreme exposure to or fluctuations of sun, heat, moisture, temperature, etc.  For example, never leave it your car on a hot day, never leave it in direct sunlight, do not store in an unheated space, etc.

•  Humidity is more important that temperature.  Pay attention to the relative humidity where you live and try to keep the drum in a balanced environment, ideally between 40% and 50% relative humidity.   See chart below for more details.

•  Always transport drum in a good quality case.

•  Clean and treat the drum surface as you would any piece of fine woodwork.

•  Do not play the drum with anything other than your open hands or brushes specifically designed for cajon drums.

Damage to the drum caused by using it any way other than as intended is not covered by the warranty.  For example, bashing, kicking, punching or other wise beating the hell out of the drum with your hands until it is broken is not covered by the warranty.  Damage caused by hitting drum with anything other than your hands or cajon brushes is not covered by the warranty.  Damage caused by abuse such as falling, dropping, or otherwise physically mistreating the drum is not covered.  Wood is a natural material that will always change in response to variations in it's environment.  Failures due to environmental conditions are not covered under this warranty.   See chart below .

In other words, if you break it or abuse it, that's your problem,  but if it fails under normal conditions due to improper manufacturing or defective materials, I will be more than happy to repair or replace the item.

This Cajon Snare System is a Game Changer.

The knob adjusts the tension of the snare wires to produce a wide variety of timbres, from totally clean sounds with the snare fully off, all the way up to a tight, cracking snare like a traditional kit drummer is used to. The snare dials into a specific spot on the head so it’s almost like the snare sound gets added to the mix of possible sounds by striking the head in the “hot spot”, while maintaining, the usual range of clean bass, mid-tone, and rim shots sounds.

Ergonomics for Percussionists:

I want to talk about ergonomics a little bit because I think that a lot of people, and that includes most drum makers, are not giving it it’s due. Plus I want to share some of the thought that went into the design of the C7D Hybrid-Cajon, so that you will know about all the love that went into making it.

What is ergonomics?

Here’s the definition from the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary:

ERGONOMICS
1: an applied science concerned with designing and arranging things people use so that the people and things interact most efficiently and safely —called also biotechnology, human engineering, human factors
2: the design characteristics of an object resulting especially from the application of the science of ergonomics

The way the human body interacts with a musical instrument is really as essential as the sound to the experience of collaborating with the instrument to make music.

Why Wood Headed Cajon Drums Are Taking Over the Percussion World:

There are reasons why the cajon drum is a dominant force in modern percussion.  For some it is that is simply something new and unique in a scene dominated by traditional percussion instruments and their wrote styles of playing. For some it is the fact that it can be used to mimic a full drum kit which is a lot of fun and works well with the trend toward unplugged sets.  For major manufacturers the cajon is a plywood box, easy and cheap to bring to market.  Slap some veneer on some inferior materials and suddenly it is a high value item (that is still a plywood box.)

Even though I come at it from a different angle there are compelling practical reasons why I choose to make wood headed drums, following is a list of some of my favorites.

Sonus Lignorum - The Sound of Wood

The C7D hybrid-cajon is like nothing you have ever heard before, yet all the familiar elements are there such that it is easy to jump right in and make music.

The sound really is a hybrid with the low bass of a djembe, the round open tones of a conga, the energetic finger work of the box cajon and in between there are muted tones, multiple bass tones, melodic rim shots,  various open tones, clicks and taps and pink and ponk and we haven't even dialed up the snare yet!   For latin players it plays like a cajon, african players take it in that direction, cajon players love it because it adds the middle and bottom to the cajon.  Some compare the woody purity to the tongue drum, the slit drum, or hang drum

Tired of Imported, Mass Produced and Lame? Me too.

Circle 7 Drums is a small, family owned and operated business.  Each drum is proudly made, by hand, with local materials in Mount Shasta, California, USA, it is given a unique serial number and is then personally signed by the craftsperson who actually made it, and that means something.

Most, of the major drum manufacturers have their drums made overseas.  That benefits their bottom line, but at the expense of the environment and a healthy economy back home.

Where you spend your money is one of the most relevant choices you can make in today’s world.  Support people and businesses that share your values and the world will start to reflect those values.
